Year 2 2026-27

We will discuss more detail about the curriculum at the Home School Partnership Evening on Wednesday 24^th September.

Drop-off information FOR THIS WEEK

Class teachers will collect their classes from the playground at 8:55 AM. When the bell rings, please guide your child to their class sign and encourage them to line up ready. To support a smooth transition into school, encourage your child to join their class line and walk in independently with their peers.

• Please note: Year 1 children should wait in the playground until 8:55 AM. They do not enter the building early like KS2 students, unless it is raining.

Pick up information

At the end of the day, Year 2 children can be collected from the area near the climbing frame at the far end of the playground. Please wait for the teacher to dismiss your child, as they have been asked to stay with their teacher until they have been told they can leave.

Our PE lessons take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays. On these days, children should come to school wearing their PE kit and remain in it for the duration of the day.

Water Bottles – Please ensure that your child brings a named water bottle to school with them each day so that they can hydrate regularly throughout the day.

Playtime Snacks – If your child is bringing a snack in for playtime, please ensure that it is a small/well portioned, healthy snack that can be eaten within a short space of time. No sweets, biscuits or food containing nuts or traces of nuts should be brought in.

General Routine Information

Monday	Gardening/Forest School	Please bring appropriate wet weather coat and wellington boots depending on weather
Tuesday	Homework	We will set homework each Tuesday via the Google Classroom. Children’s log ins should be the same but we will reissue these with up to date information.
Wednesday	Outdoor PE (Damsons and Apricots)	Apricots & Damsons should come to school in a full Belmont PE kit that is labelled.
Thursday	Return books	Please return Reading Records, Reading for Pleasure, Little Wandle Reading Books, library books and CGP books.
	Indoor PE (Damsons & Apricots)	Apricots & Damsons should come to school in a full Belmont PE kit including trainers
	Times-Table Challenge	The Times Tables challenge are completed in class on Thursdays. If the children does not pass in the given time they will use a different colour to complete the rest and bring home to practice further. There is no expectation to pass every week and usually it takes multiple attempts before being able to complete all of the answers in the given time.
Friday	Spellings	We complete our weekly spellings.
	Library (Apricots and Damsons)	Children will select a new book of their choice from the school infant library and these will be sent home with their reading for pleasure books, CGP books and Wandle books.

Autumn Topic 

Our topic this term is called ‘I ❤️ London ‘ and we will be learning about the history of the buildings in London, Samuel Pepys and the Great Fire of London.  We will be visiting St Pauls cathedral.

Home Learning timetable

Please see the table below for details of the home learning tasks.

Reading	15 minutes daily. Please return reading records every Wednesday to let us see how your child is getting on and to let the children get new reading books. Make sure that the adult records a comment to say how the reading has gone. This does not need to be longer than the box provided. Children will also take a school library book to read at home for pleasure. Please return these on Wednesday so that they can choose a new book on Thursday.
Spellings	Year 2 Spellings. Previous spellings – Spelling words which use / / spelt with // Please practise using these words in a sentence. The link below has the Common Exception Words for KS1 if you would like some extra spellings to practise at home. By the end of year 2 children are expected to begin to join their writing. We will have lessons in class focussing on this but do encourage children to practice and we know some children are already attempting to do this.

Books we are reading in class this term include:

                 

Reading Books

Reading Records – once they have been given out, reading records should be returned to school every Thursday with a comment about how your child has read in the past week. This is so the reading records can be checked and a new reading book can be allocated or given. We also give out the reading for pleasure/sharing books on Thursdays, so these books also need to be brought to school along with the reading records.

Little Wandle/Phonics level books – Please note that some children will be bringing home a physical copy of the book, wherever possible and others will be issued an ebook. For those pupils who have moved onto Fluency level books they will be allocated ebooks only as we do not have physical copies to send home.

Reading for Pleasure

In addition to our reading expectations for Year 2, we also encourage reading for pleasure. As part of our focus on reading in school, we would like to develop the lending library of books within each class. This will enable the children to foster a passion and love of reading at Belmont and ensure that they have access to high quality texts.

Please find links to the book list that has a variety of books that we would love to have in class.  Once you have donated a book, please tick on the spreadsheet for your child’s class to show we now have it.  Please check the list to ensure that the book that you would like to donate is one that we don’t already have. These books will be stamped to show who has generously donated them and shared with all the class.

The below list is part of an initiative called Word Aware that we are using in school. We thought it would be helpful to share this list with you so that you can use some of these words at home when discussing the topic. If your child speaks a different language at home, it would be helpful to discuss and translate these words using your home language. We may add to this list during the topic as new words are introduced.
