Year 1 Trip to Chiswick House

As part of our science learning around ‘Plants’, we will be visiting Chiswick House on Tuesday 7th July in the afternoon. We will be leaving school at 12.30 and returning to school in time for the end of the day. Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to come with us.

📚 Book Return Reminder

Please could you have a quick look around at home for any Little Wandle, school reading or library books that may have found a hiding place?

If you find any, we’d be very grateful if you could return them to school. Every book returned helps us keep our reading resources complete and available for all of our children.

Thank you for your support!

Bag for books and work to bring home

In readiness for the end of term, please send in a bag so that your children can bring their school books home. They will do this in the latter part of the final week so if they can bring it in ready WB 13.7.26 that would be helpful.

Please also return any school reading books that might be at home such as the Y2 Reading for Pleasure Sharing books, Library books or any Little Wandle reading books

Reading for Pleasure books

Thank you to everyone who has been able to donate to our reading for pleasure book library.

Celebrations

In Year 1, we still enjoy teaching the children about important cultural and religious celebrations, particularly when they are significant to families in our class. In the past, we’ve really valued having parents come in to share their knowledge and experiences of special festivals and celebrations. If there are any of these that you are celebrating at home, it would be great if you could come in a share some information around this with your class. Please speak with your class teacher, if this is something you would like to do.

Y1 – Homework/ Home Learning

Please see the table below for details of the home learning tasks.

Spellings

Please remember that there are no spelling tests in Year 1. These activities are designed to build confidence and familiarity with reading and writing words. As stated by Little Wandle, repeated practice of spelling helps children move their new learning into their long-term memory. In Year 1 especially, it is important to try to find time to practise and embed spelling outside of the phonics lessons.

Have a go with reading these words. You could put them on post it notes around the house and encourage your child to recognise the alternative grapheme and then read the word.

Tricky Words

Additional activity: sentence dictation

To help children apply their phonic learning to their writing, it helps to put the sentence into context. Here are some sentences you can practise writing.

  • I yawn all the way through breakfast.
  • I thought that girl had a bird on her cloak.
  • I am proud that I found that feather.
  • We enjoy mucking about in the water.

Common Exception Words

This term, we are practising reading and writing Common Exception Words. Please support your child by helping them practise reading and writing these words. Once confident, they can try using the words in a sentence.

Click here to find words: T-L-5155-Year-1-Common-Exception-Words_ver_4

For your understanding, Common Exception Words don’t follow the normal rules, so you can’t always sound them out perfectly. You have to learn them by looking at them again and again, like learning a secret code! We call them exception words because they are the exception to the rule!

MathsPlease check Google Classroom every Wednesday afternoon for details of the maths homework task that has been set.
Creative Home LearningThe creative home learning for Autumn Term has been uploaded onto Google Classroom. This is due in WB ___________ via Google Classroom. See Google Classroom for more details.

Y1 – Reading

Phonics/Reading Books (eCollins) & Reading for Pleasure (Sharing Books)

Daily Little Wandle phonics lessons continue in Year 1. In a similar way to Reception, phonics will be taught in groups by all Year 1 staff. Three times a week the children also read with an adult as part of a smaller group. These reading groups work on decoding, prosody and comprehension. At the end of every week, we will allocate this eBook to your child on the Collins website. New logins will be shared in your child’s reading record once they are ready. As in Reception, we will send physical books home if parents have signed the agreement to do so. Please return these books on a Wednesday and they will be sent home on a Thursday.

In addition to this, every Thursday (starting 15th September) your child will choose a sharing book and a library book. Please make sure book bags are in school on a Wednesday and we will return on a Thursday. These books are recommended Year 1 texts – both fiction and non-fiction These are not designed to be at the child’s reading ability but please enjoy these together. They are labelled with a shiny Year 1 sticker. These books are returned and allocated every Wednesday.

We would like library and sharing books in every Wednesday. There is no need to bring these books on other days.

Reading for Pleasure

As part of our continued focus on reading in school, we would like to continue the lending library of books within each class. This will enable the children to foster a passion and love of reading at Belmont and ensure that they have access to high quality texts.
Please find links to the book list that has a variety of books that we would love to have in class.  Once a book has been donated to the class we will add a tick to show we now have it.  Please check the list to ensure that the book that you would like to donate is one that we don’t already have.
These books will be stamped to show who has generously donated them and shared with all the class. The books come from the Recommended Books for Year 1 List which can be found below.
