School Calendar

Thursday 8th October  – 9am Phonics parent meeting

Book fair   Tuesday 13th October to Friday 16th from 8.40am – 9.00am and after school from 3.25pm – 3.45pm (Wednesday to Friday only).

Tuesday 13th October  afternoon 1pm – Local walk around Chiswick (PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE)

Thursday 5th November – Dress up as a toy  – Children can come to school dressed up as a toy – In addition they can bring into school their favourite toy to show other children.

Costume ideas – toy soldier, rubic cube, doll, princess, lego etc

Monday 9th November  – Trip to Gunnersbury park museum – (More information to be sent out soon)

 

The children have settled into Year 1 and are learning the new rules and routines.

We will be sending home Reading for pleasure, library and Physical wandle books (if you have signed up)/Assigning the Collins E books on Thursday this week. Please remember to return these books every Wednesday.

 

Drop-off information

The soft start from 8.45am has been wonderful to see. The children in Year 1 are very settled and have been enjoying the earlier start. Year 1 have joined the rest of the school and enter through the first stairwell, nearest to the main playground gate anytime between 8.45-8.55am. This is the same entrance they will already be familiar using when it has been raining. 

Pick up information

At the end of the day, Year 1 children can be collected from the area near the climbing frame at the far end of the playground. Please wait for the teacher to dismiss your child, as they have been asked to stay with their class until called.

Our PE lessons take place on Tuesdays and Fridays. On these days, children should come to school wearing their PE kit and remain in it for the duration of the day.

Monday
Tuesday	Indoor PE (Cherries and Pears)	Children need to come to school in a full Belmont PE kit that is labelled.
Wednesday	Bring Book bags to  school ready to return the following: Little Wandle books Library books Reading for Pleasure books
Thursday	Book bags will be sent home with new reading for pleasure, Library books and Little wandle books (Assigned virtually/Physical book)
Friday	Kitchen Garden or Forest School (half termly swap) Outdoor PE (Cherries and Pears)	Bring appropriate wet weather coat and wellington boots depending on weather Children need to come to school in a full Belmont PE kit that is labelled.

Celebrations

In Year 1, we still enjoy teaching the children about important cultural and religious celebrations, particularly when they are significant to families in our class. In the past, we’ve really valued having parents come in to share their knowledge and experiences of special festivals and celebrations. If there are any of these that you are celebrating at home, it would be great if you could come in a share some information around this with your class. Please speak with your class teacher, if this is something you would like to do.

Spellings	This will be updated every Wednesday  Please remember that there are no spelling tests in Year 1. These activities are designed to build confidence and familiarity with reading and writing words. As stated by Little Wandle, repeated practice of spelling helps children move their new learning into their long-term memory. In Year 1 especially, it is important to try to find time to practise and embed spelling outside of the phonics lessons. Have a go with reading these words and sounds in preparation for your phonics lessons beginning on 14th September. You could put them on post it notes around the house and encourage your child to recognise the alternative grapheme and then read the word. Graphemes Additional activity: sentence dictation To help children apply their phonic learning to their writing, it helps to put the sentence into context. Here are some sentences you can practise writing. Autumn 1 week 5 I can see the farmyard from my bedroom. The kitten is playing with the rabbit. I enjoy eating a heap of peas. The forest has a track that leads to a train. Common Exception Words This term, we are practising reading and writing Common Exception Words. Please support your child by helping them practise reading and writing these words. Once confident, they can try using the words in a sentence. Click here to find words: T-L-5155-Year-1-Common-Exception-Words_ver_4 For your understanding, Common Exception Words don’t follow the normal rules, so you can’t always sound them out perfectly. You have to learn them by looking at them again and again, like learning a secret code! We call them exception words because they are the exception to the rule!
Maths	Children will be receiving their usernames and passwords on Thursday. Please use the Mymaths details to login and complete the learning.  Number bonds to 20 Using apparatus and pictorial representations to learn number bonds. Feel free to continue to practise any previous activities assigned.

Phonics/Reading Books (eCollins) & Reading for Pleasure (Sharing Books)  

Daily Little Wandle phonics lessons continue in Year 1. In a similar way to Reception, phonics will be taught in groups by all Year 1 staff. Three times a week the children also read with an adult as part of a smaller group. These reading groups work on decoding, prosody and comprehension. At the end of every week, we will allocate this eBook to your child on the Collins website. New logins will be shared in your child’s reading record once they are ready. As in Reception, we will send physical books home if parents have signed the agreement to do so. Please return these books on a Wednesday and they will be sent home on a Thursday.

In addition to this, every Thursday (starting 15^th September) your child will choose a sharing book and a library book. Please make sure book bags are in school on a Wednesday and we will return on a Thursday. These books are recommended Year 1 texts – both fiction and non-fiction These are not designed to be at the child’s reading ability but please enjoy these together. They are labelled with a shiny Year 1 sticker. These books are returned and allocated every Wednesday.

We would like library and sharing books in every Wednesday. There is no need to bring these books on other days.

 

Reading for Pleasure

In addition to our reading expectations for Year 1, we also encourage reading for pleasure. As part of our focus on reading in school, we would like to develop the lending library of books within each class. This will enable the children to foster a passion and love of reading at Belmont and ensure that they have access to high quality texts.

Please find links to the book list that has a variety of books that we would love to have in class.  Once you have donated a book, please tick on the spreadsheet for your child’s class to show we now have it.  Please check the list to ensure that the book that you would like to donate is one that we don’t already have. These books will be stamped to show who has generously donated them and shared with all the class.
