Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education
Intent
At Belmont Primary School, PSHE is a journey the children follow throughout their school life. It is central to our school ethos and it equips children with the knowledge, skills and attributes to manage healthy, safe and responsible lives.
- The children have accurate and relevant knowledge of PSHE which gives them the opportunity to explore a range of values, attributes and rights and responsibilities.
- They are given a range of opportunities to develop a personal understanding.
- Children will develop a range of skills and strategies to live a healthy, safe, responsible and balanced life.
Implementation
Our PSHE curriculum covers all areas of the subject. One timetabled PSHE lesson per week is taught throughout the school and delivered in an age-appropriate way to meet children’s needs. In the Foundation Stage, PSHE is an integral part of the curriculum. A programme of learning designed by Think Equal has been implemented across the phase to teach social and emotional skills to the early years. The Think Equal scheme uses narrative to provide children with skills in core competencies such as equality, empathy and peaceful conflict resolution. Weekly home learning kits are sent home every week to reinforce learning outcomes and foster meaningful conversations at home.
Our PSHE curriculum is Jigsaw, which includes opportunities to link learning with the British Values, SMSC and Key Skills. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. This enables us to generate a whole school focus for adults and children alike.
There are many other opportunities where children are involved in PSHE outside of the discreet lesson, including assemblies, where a range of themes are covered.
Some of these include cross curriculum teaching, the school council (there is one representative from each class from Year 3 to Year 6), Year 6 House Captains, joint activities between year groups such as our ‘Reading Buddies’, regular performances for parents, online safety talks, Mental Health Awareness weeks, Black History Month, Anti-Bullying Week and Odd Socks Day, and Walk to School Week.
Impact
- Children will demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of Law and Liberty.
- Children will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards schools. Attendance is in-line with the national and behaviour is very good.
- Children will become healthy and responsible members of society
- Children are on a journey which is preparing them to be a global citizen and in their future roles in the global community.

Anti-Bullying Week
Every year in November, Belmont Primary School proudly participates in Anti-Bullying Week, an annual UK event coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance that aims to raise awareness about bullying and promote ways to prevent and respond to it.
We always begin the week with Odd Socks Day. On this day, we encourage the children to wear funky, colourful, odd socks to promote the idea that we are all different, and that being individual and unlike anyone else is what makes each of us unique.
This year’s theme for the week was ‘Power for Good’. The children explored ways they could use their positive ‘powers’, such as kindness, honesty and inclusion, to counter the harm bullying causes.
Jigsaw: The Mindful approach to PSHE
Jigsaw has two aims for children, which are to build their capacity for learning and to equip them for life. Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education and mindfulness. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. This enables us to generate a whole school focus for adults and children alike. There are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with six Pieces (lessons). Every year group studies the same theme at the same time. Each year group is taught one lesson per week and all lessons are delivered in an age-appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs.
Themes:
Autumn 1: Being me in my world
Autumn 2: Celebrating difference
Spring 1: Dreams and Goals
Spring 2: Healthy Me
Summer 1: Relationships
Summer 2: Changing me
What else is included in Jigsaw?
There are Jigsaw Friends (jigsaw-shaped soft toys) and Jigsaw chimes. The Jigsaw programme is underpinned by mindfulness. Jigsaw teaches children to understand their thoughts and feelings and through both taught lessons and the Calm Me time exercises.
PSHE Logbooks
At Belmont Primary School, we see PSHE as a journey the children follow from Nursery to Year 6.
To showcase this fantastic journey and the opportunities the children are given each class has their own PSHE scrapbook. This is a place where we can record the different activities the children have taken part in from voting in School Council to exciting workshops and trips.
Relationship and Sex Education
The Department for Education has made Relationships and Health Education compulsory for all primary aged children.
For all schools, Sex Education as part of the science curriculum remains the same. Sex Education as part of RSE is not compulsory, however schools may choose to deliver this as part of a timetabled PSHE programme. Belmont Primary School teaches Sex Education as part of our PSHE curriculum. All lessons are compulsory, apart from the non-statutory components of Sex Education. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from these lessons. Please see the RSE at Belmont presentation below for more details.
