We are writing to update you on travel arrangements for our Year 1 trip to see The Lion King this Wednesday, due to the planned Tube strikes.

To ensure the trip can still go ahead safely, we are currently considering two alternative travel options:

Option 1: Travel via the London Overground from Chiswick Station
Option 2: Travel by the 94 bus directly to and from the theatre

Both options will take longer than our original journey. If you have kindly volunteered to accompany the trip, please arrive at school by 11:30am, ready for departure at 11:45am at the latest.

Due to the expected disruption, our estimated return time is approximately 6:30pm. If your child usually attends The Hive, please note that it closes at 6:00pm, so alternative arrangements will need to be made.

We are continuing to monitor the situation closely and will confirm the final travel arrangements tomorrow morning, choosing the safest and most reliable option available.

Please be assured that the safety and wellbeing of all children remains our top priority, and the trip will be carefully organised and fully staffed.

As the children take part in a range of cutting and creative activities throughout the year, we are currently running low on glue sticks. If you are able to donate a glue stick or two to help replenish our class supplies, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you can donate a new Reading Pleasure book from our list below, it would be greatly appreciated. There are lots of new books added to the list for this year and as you can see we do not have many of these books.

Children need to come to school in a full Belmont PE kit that is labelled.

• Finding out how many groups of ten are in a number

• Using adjectives to describe Scar from Lion King. First, labelling with key words. Using these words to write a character description.
• Writing a recount of the Lion King trip using words: first, then, next and finally.

• Know that everyone’s family is different
• Know that families are founded on belonging, love and care
• Know that physical contact can be used as a greeting
• Know how to make a friend
• Know who to ask for help in the school community
• Know that there are lots of different types of families
• Know the characteristics of healthy and safe friends
• Know about the different people in the school community and how they help

Please remember that there are no spelling tests in Year 1. These activities are designed to build confidence and familiarity with reading and writing words. As stated by Little Wandle, repeated practice of spelling helps children move their new learning into their long-term memory. In Year 1 especially, it is important to try to find time to practise and embed spelling outside of the phonics lessons.

Have a go with reading these words. You could put them on post it notes around the house and encourage your child to recognise the alternative grapheme and then read the word.

Additional activity: sentence dictation

To help children apply their phonic learning to their writing, it helps to put the sentence into context. Here are some sentences you can practise writing.

• Tie a ribbon on the tree with pink blossoms.
• I like ripe plums the best and lemons the least.
• Open the box and look inside!
• Did you get the note I left under the stone?

Common Exception Words

This term, we are practising reading and writing Common Exception Words. Please support your child by helping them practise reading and writing these words. Once confident, they can try using the words in a sentence.

For your understanding, Common Exception Words don’t follow the normal rules, so you can’t always sound them out perfectly. You have to learn them by looking at them again and again, like learning a secret code! We call them exception words because they are the exception to the rule!
